Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad-Taqi al-Husayni al-Modarresi, spiritual leader of Tarighat Al-Husayn (PBUH)
The Meaning and Essence of Ramadan:
Derived from the root word “ramad,” which means intense heat, the name Ramadan symbolizes the burning away of sins and the endurance of physical and spiritual hardships. It is revered as the month of God, serving as a time of spiritual purification where believers undergo a transformative process by enduring thirst and battling the rebellious self to achieve divine forgiveness.
Major Historical Events:
Ramadan is a historically monumental time, marking numerous pivotal events in Islamic history. These include the revelation of the Quran, the ascension of Jesus to the heavens, the Battles of Badr and Tabuk, the Conquest of Mecca, as well as significant milestones for the Prophet’s family, such as the birth of Imam Hasan, the passings of Hazrat Khadija and Abu Talib, and the martyrdom of Hazrat Ali.
The Quranic Mandate:
From the perspective of the Holy Quran, Ramadan is established as the month of divine guidance and the clear distinction between truth and falsehood. Fasting is commanded for a limited number of days to cultivate piety and gratitude; however, God mercifully provides exemptions for the ill or traveling, emphasizing that the ultimate goal is spiritual fulfillment without imposing unbearable hardship.
Prophetic Traditions and Boundless Rewards:
According to Islamic Hadith, the arrival of Ramadan brings unparalleled spiritual opportunities: the doors of heaven and mercy are opened, the doors of hell are closed, and rebellious devils are chained. Believers who fast, pray, and guard their tongues and eyes from forbidden acts are promised profound purification, emerging from the month as sinless as the day they were born
Seven Divine Promises for the Sincere:
The Prophet outlined seven specific blessings guaranteed to those who fast solely for the sake of God. These include the melting away of forbidden elements within the body, proximity to divine mercy, expiation for the original sin of Adam, ease during the agony of death, safety from the hunger and thirst of Resurrection Day, a share of heavenly sustenance, and ultimate immunity from the fires of hell.
Unique Blessings for the Ummah:
The followers of the Prophet are granted five exclusive gifts during Ramadan that were not given to any previous nation. These include God’s graceful gaze on the first night, breath that is purer than musk to God, the constant prayers of angels, the adornment of heaven in preparation for their arrival, and absolute forgiveness of all sins on the final night as a reward for their spiritual labor.
The Importance of Community and the Quran:
Ramadan places a profound emphasis on empathy, charity, and the recitation of the Quran, which is described as having its “spring” during this holy month. Acts of communal generosity, particularly providing Iftar (breaking the fast) to others, are highly elevated, with the reward of feeding a fasting person equated to freeing a slave and securing forgiveness for past sins, even if the meal is as simple as a draught of water or milk.
Welcoming the Crescent Moon:
The holy month is ushered in with deep reverence and specific supplications upon sighting the new crescent moon. Believers and the Prophet alike would turn to the Qibla, raising their hands to ask God for a month filled with security, faith, peace, and protection from illnesses, setting a deeply spiritual and intentional tone for the days of fasting ahead.
